(King 5902) May 1964
This 7" was recorded in the sessions for the Hymns Of The Cross LP, which was released a couple of months later in July 1964.
Both songs look likely to have been brought to the band by King. John Three-Sixteen had been recorded by The Delmore Brothers (as the 'Harlan County Four') and released on King in 1952[1] and Mac O'Dell had likewise recorded A Crown He Wore for King in 1954.[2]
A fairly mediocre 45, the uptempo John Three-Sixteen is probably the better of the two sides, although Earl Taylor's harmonica work on A Crown He Wore is quite neat.
Both sides of the single can be found on The King Years, 1961-1965 4xCD box set.
