Stanley Brothers
15 - 16 Jan 1961 - Fifth recording session for King (65 years ago)

At this two day session the Stanley's cut 19 tracks, many of which appeared on the LP Sing The Songs They Like Best (King KLP-772) Nov 1961. Two singles were issued prior to the album:-

  • The Window Up Above / The Wild Side Of Life (King 5460) Jan 1961
  • I'd Worship You / I'll Take The Blame (King 5518) Jun 1961

Four tracks from the session were held back for release until the LP Award Winners At The Folk Song Festival (King KLP-791) Mar 1962, whilst I'll Just Go Away wasn't released until it was coupled with Highway Ambush (aka Midnight Ramble) in Dec. 1969 (King 6236).

Meanwhile, You're Still To Blame remained in the can until the Old Homestead reissue of The Remarkable Stanley Brothers Play And Sing Bluegrass Songs For You (Old Homestead OHCS-323) 1986, and versions of Big Tilda and Steel Guitar Rag stayed in the can until the 4×CD set The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961.

Ralph II was listed as appearing (at some point) at 'Blythe Bluegrass Festival', Colorado River Fairgrounds, Blythe, California.

The festival itself ran from 14-16 January and other acts included: Chris Jones, Dave Peterson, Plow, Wayne Taylor, Copper River, Blue Canyon Boys, Silverado, Monroe Crossing, IIIrd Generation, Grasslands, Kid Fiddlers, and Virtual Strangers.

Ralph had a show at the 'Shindig In The Barn', the Guernsey Barn, 5 miles East of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Also appearing were: the Stone Mountain Boys, and the Burkhart Family. Tickets cost $2.

16 Jan 1975 - Betsy Lane, KY (51 years ago)

Ralph had a show at the Betsy Lane Fieldhouse, Betsy Lane, Kentucky. Also appearing were Bill Monroe, and The Marshall Family.

16 Jan 1982 - Tampa, FL (44 years ago)

Ralph was billed as appearing at the 'Bluegrass Concert', 7-11pm at Chamberlain High School in Tampa, Florida.

The show was organised by Perk's Bluegrass Music and also included: Big Timber Bluegrass, Sawgrass, and Beaumont Family. Tickets cost $7.50 (reserved), $6 (regular admission)

16 Jan 1986 - Cullman, AL (40 years ago)

Ralph was listed as appearing at the Cullman Civic Center, in Cullman, Alabama. Also on the bill were the Sullivan Family, and Bull City Bluegrass.

16 Jan 1999 - Knoxville, TN (27 years ago)

Ralph appeared at the 'Downtown Hoedown II' at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee. The event was presented by Soppin' The Gravy WDVX Radio show, so portions may have been broadcast. Also appearing were Tony Rice (with Dan Tyminski, Sammy Shelor, and Ronnie & Rickie Simpkins), and the Nashville Bluegrass Band (plus Misty River playing in the lobby). Tickets cost $20.50.

Jim Lauderdale did a guest spot with Ralph, performing I'll Take You Home.

16 Jan 2002 - Nashville, TN (24 years ago)

Ralph appeared as part of the 'All Star Bluegrass Celebration' at the Ryman, Auditorium, Nashville, Tennessee, which was recorded for PBS and later issued on DVD (Lickona Vision 22976-30019)

Other acts included: Ricky Skaggs, Earl Scruggs, Del McCoury, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Travis Tritt, Bruce Hornsby, Patty Loveless, and Nickel Creek.

16 Jan 2004 - Bristol, TN (22 years ago)

Ralph had a show at the Paramount Center for the Arts, Bristol, Tennessee. Also on the bill were Mac Puckett & the Good Company Band, Sapling Grove, and Appalachian Trail. The concert was a benefit to help raise funds for medical expenses of Bluegrass musician Jeffrey Brown who was battling Chron's disease. Reserved seating tickets cost $18.

16 Jan 2005 - Appomattox, VA (21 years ago)

Ralph had a show at Appomattox County High School, Appomattox, Virginia. Tickets cost $20.

16 Jan 2010 - Galax, VA (16 years ago)

Ralph had show at the Fairview Ruritan Club, Galax, Virginia. Tickets cost $20.
