(CMH CMHD-8007) 1994
This soundtrack CD to Rachel Liebling's excellent High Lonesome: The Story Of Bluegrass Music film/DVD includes two Ralph Stanley tracks, and one live Stanley Brothers cut.
Ralph's version of Gloryland is from his Something Old, Something New LP, but prefixed by a short 12-13 second bit of dialog from the film; and The Fields Have Turned Brown is from the I Want To Preach The Gospel album, with John Duffey on mandolin and high baritone.
The Stanley Brothers track, Meet Me By The Moonlight (aka Meet Me Tonight) is from the 3rd June 1956 show at Shenandoah Valley Bowl, Edinburg, Va. It has also been issued on the Together For The Last Time LP and Stanley Series, Vol. 2 No. 1 LP/CD.
The film is a fabulous introduction to bluegrass, but if you've got the DVD, the CD is largely superfluous.
The CD also comes with a 12-page booklet, but in my copy the images haven't been cropped correctly and have been overprinted onto part of the text, making the liner notes impossible to read in places.
For a detailed breakdown and background to the Stanley's show, check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 59-60 and 76-77.
