The Stanley Brothers - When Jesus Beckons Me Home / Pass Me Not

(King 5313) Feb 1960

When Jesus Beckons Me Home (Promo)

This 7" features two of the numbers the Stanley's recorded in a marathon session in Sept 1959, where they cut 17 songs in one day! After being released on this single, both cuts were featured on the For The Good People LP which was released the following Aug.

'Billboard' reviewed the single in their 22nd Feb 1960 edition, giving both sides two stars and describing When Jesus Beckons Me Home as:- "Sincere rendition of a country-flavored sacred item." While Pass Me Not simply got:- "Same comment."[1]

When Jesus Beckons Me Home was written by Gene Arnold and recorded by him in 1933.[2] Cowboy Copas also featured the song on his 'Hymns And Sacred Songs' LP (King 619) that was released in May 1959.[3] Like many of the selections on For The Good People, it's likely that King brought the song to the session with the Stanley's.

Pass Me Not is a 19th century hymn written by Francis J. Crosby in 1868 and set to music by William H. Doane in 1870.[4]

Both cuts on this 7" can now be found on The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 4xCD box set.

PS: If anyone can supply images of the blue 'stock' labels for this 45, please get in touch via the Contact page - thanks!
