Please rate this album:

Despite the tacky cover, this is an excellent compilation of Larry's Gospel work including six tracks from Gonna Be Movin', three of the 'new' tracks from Testing Times plus two of the King Bluegrass era songs from Testing Times, and the version of John B. Preston's I've Just Seen The Rock Of Ages from Travelin'.

Gary Reid's liner notes sum up the collection: "The Old Church Yard then, is a masterful body of material that spans a considerable portion of Larry Sparks' career. To this choice batch of gems, Larry applies his talents thoughtfully and skillfully. He is more than just a performer - he is a stylist and his soulful and bluesy vocals and riveting guitar notes are instantly recognizable. These traits very convincingly demonstrate the magic behind this staying power through decades of performing. With instrument and voice, he makes music that is second to none. With lyrics, he conveys a gospel message that is dear to his heart. Its superb blend and the results are yours to enjoy".

NB: Family Bible was written by Willie Nelson around 1957 but he sold it to Paul Buskirk, who then took it to Claude Gray. Gray's recording of the song reached No. 7 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart.[1] Gary Reid's liner notes indicate that the song was recorded by Larry during his time recording for King Bluegrass with a recording date of March 1975, but the personnel listed for both this CD and the Testing Times LP match the 1982/3 Lonesome Ramblers line-up.
