(Lundy LTD-153) 1992
Another relatively obscure cassette, recorded at Lundy Recording in Heidrick, Ky on 17th March 1992. I don't know much about Johnny Collins, but from a 2014 youtube clip with Larry Sparks it looks like he was originally from Pennington Gap, Va. (about 60 miles from Ralph) and later lived in Scottsburg In. / Salem In.
From the catalogue number, it looks likely that it was recorded around the same time as Junior Blankenship & Ernie Thacker - Old Virginia, and similarly features Ron Stewart on fiddle / banjo.
Most of the backing is dominated by Ron's banjo/fidddle, but Junior can be heard playing some fine lead guitar fills on several cuts. Ernie, too plays a few lead breaks, but is otherwise pretty low in the mix.
The sole instruemental Wilderness Road, features Ron Stewart playing all the instruments, and is probably the highlight of the tape.
Most of the material is drawn from the Stanley / Monroe / Flatt & Scruggs repertoire, although it's nice to see a version of Montana Cowboy which was (I think) first cut by Ted Lundy / Bob Paisley.
(*) all instrumentation on Wilderness Road.
