Please rate this album:

This is a greatest hit compilation, with the How Far To Little Rock title track making it's first appearance on a Stanley Brothers album.

Although the LP sleeve says, "Portions of this album are electronically reprocessed to simulate stereo", the sound isn't too bad. Nowadays, of course, all the King/Starday material are covered on the excellent The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 and The King Years, 1961-1965 4xCD sets...

By the time this LP was released, the King label had been sold to Starday,[1] and it's notable that the cover photo was also used on other Starday albums, including V/A - 'Banjo Jamboree Spectacular' (Starday SLP-136) 1961 and The Kentucky Travelers - 'Bluegrass Banjo Ballads' (Starday SLP-189) 1963.

The compilation also got a Scandinavian, possibly from Norway, release (Karussell Country 2345 008) 1971.

Go To Top Of Page [1] Liner notes to 'The Best Of King And Starday Bluegrass' 4xCD set (Gusto/King KG-0952-4-2) says following the death of Syd Nathan in early 1968 "King Records was sold to Starday Records. The combined King-Starday catalogs continued to operate, on somewhat shaky ground, for several years and persisted in releasing new Bluegrass recordings until 1973." (p.2)
