(King 5384) Jul 1960
This 7" was recorded at the session for the Stanley Brothers In Person LP, and rush-released in the hope of taking advantage of Hank Ballard's Finger Poppin' Time R&B hit, which King had released in April 1960.[1]
Billboard announced the Stanley's version in an article on 18th July and reviewed the single on 25th, giving both sides three stars. Finger Poppin' Time was described thus:- "This is a bluesy item with a vocal. Very effective and out of the common groove. Tune is now a hit with Hank Ballard."; and Daybreak In Dixie as:- "Bluegrass instrumental hoedown in the authentic style of the Stanley Brothers."[2]
As far as I can tell the single includes the overdubbed version of Daybreak In Dixie and the 'finger-popping' version of Finger Poppin' Time.
Both songs (including both overdubbed and undubbed variations) can be found on The Early Starday/King Years, 1958-1961 4xCD box set.
The Hank Ballard version of Finger Poppin' Time is also worth a listen and can be found on youtube.
For a detailed breakdown and background to the Stanley's sessions, check Gary B. Reid's The Music Of The Stanley Brothers book, pages 111-114 and 150.
