Please rate this album:

This gospel album is said to have been recorded at King 6-7 April 1964.[1] Thirteen songs were cut at the session, the twelve which appear on this LP plus Lonesome Truck Driver, which was included on 12 Variety Bluegrass Songs. Some sources give the recording date as March 1964.

The album was originally released as "Grand Ole Opry Hymnal" but because they weren't members of the Opry, they were prohibited from using the name and so had to change the title to "Country Hymnal".[2] Curiously, when the album was reissued on CD for a second time in 2013, it reverted back to the original title.

Springtime In Heaven was written by Don Reno and first recorded in Jan 1953 for King. Their version, which also included Jimmy Lunsford on fiddle was released on Don Reno & Red Smiley's 'Someone Will Love Me In Heaven' LP (King 617).[2] Jimmy was a nephew of Bascom Lamar Lunsford.[3]

Three 45s were released from the album: I'd Rather Be On The Inside Looking Out / My Home In The Sky (King 45-5939) 1964; Jonah And The Whale / God Has His Way (King 45-5987) 1965; and Our Fathers Had Religion / Gathering In The Sky (King 45-5988) 1965.

The cover of the 1988 LP & CD reissue is a photograph of an old worn LP sleeve, complete with ring-wear and deletion "cut-out" in the top right corner...

  • Charlie Moore: guitar, lead vocals
  • Bill Napier: banjo, baritone vocal
  • Henry Dockery: bass
  • Audie Webster: mandolin, tenor vocal
  • Jimmy Lunsford: fiddle, bass vocal
