(BluGras C-002) 1973
I'm not sure how this album fits in chronologically with Ralph 'Joe' Meadows' other 1973 LP's, but it was reviewed in 'Bluegrass Unlimited' in June 1973, which refers to him having already recorded with the Black Mountain Boys, and another LP of his own for Jessup "due for release in May". This indicates that this BluGras LP was probably recorded after Jan/Feb 1973.
The album provides an excellent showcase for Joe's versatile fiddling, and is the first of his to feature Buddy Griffin on banjo. Highlights include, the old-time rendition of Cruel Willie; an exemplary version of Black Mountain Rag; and the instrumental take on Hank Williams' Kawliga, but all twelve tracks deliver.
Candy Gal has multi-tracked sweet-sounding fiddles, and more prominent banjo, including a short chromatic break by Buddy Griffin.
Another (more old-time) version of Say Old Man Can You Play The Fiddle by Joe can be heard on the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys' Million Lonely Days LP. Black Mountain Rag (An amalgam of Leslie Keith's Black Mountain Blues/Clinch Mountain Blues), likewise was also recorded by Joe on his West Virginia Fiddler LP.
The cover photo makes use of a generic photo which was also used on the V/A - 'Bluegrass On Campus Vol. 1' (Outlet Records O-1000) 1973 and The Bluegrass Travelers - 'Bluegrass Memories' (Riverside) 197?. This would have helped to keep production costs down on the LP. The "BluGras" Record label seems to have been the work of Arnette A. Cunningham, who get's production credit. Other releases shown on "Bluegrass Records" include The Singing Browns - 'I Hear The Echoes' (LPAC-003) where A.A. Cunningham is pictured on the rear sleeve & credited with production/engineering and playing Pedal Steel, Dobro and bass.
The liner notes to the album include some comments by Joe Meadows on the individual tracks:
"I learned Rutland's Reel from Howdy Forrester, who is one of my favorite fiddle players, but I kind of worked it up into a blue grass style."
"Cruel Willie is one of my own arrangements. I actually play two fiddles in this, one at a time, and record both for the twin fiddle effect."
"My next number is The Shawnee which is my own original arrangement. I guess the reason I called this Shawnee was that there was a tribe of Indians out of Kentucky that came to this area when the settlers of Mercer County settled here. The Indians killed these settlers. This is down next to where I live and there is a lake called Shawnee Lake. And the tune that I wrote is kind of an Indian style; I guess that is what you would call it. Most of the tunes that are wrote in these minors are given Indian names so I wanted to call this one shawnee. This tune is done in G minor."
"Our next tune is Black Mountain Rag. I have always heard that Leslie Keith wrote this tune and it became a well known fiddle tune while in the C.C.C Camp at Black Mountain, West Virginia. I have done some rearrangement of this tune and play it in my own style."
"The next one we have is Billy In The Low Ground, which is an old fiddle tune that is usually heard at contests all over the country. I worked this up in my own style. I learned this tune from Fiddlin' Red Herron, or from a record by him right after I started playin' the fiddle. This is one of the tunes I learned which I thought he had done an awful good job on, but I worked up my own arrangement on it."
"A song that has an unusual name is Kawliga which has been arranged by Rob and Stella Mashburn into a fiddle tune. The lyrics are by Hank Williams. I think it makes a real nice fiddle tune and it is played in G minor. It's got an Indian beat, kind of in the style of The Shawnee. You have seen the Indians do the war dance... well, this is where this comes from... from the beat that they give on the drums."
"I learned the next tune, Martin's Waltz from Benny Martin. I don't think it has ever been recorded. I don't know if Benny ever had it copyrighted, probably so. I think it is an awful pretty waltz. It's one of my favorites so I wanted to record it."
"Now I kind of got the idea for my next tune from my Dad. It's called Camp Creek. It is one of the tunes he used to play, and of course, Camp Creek is the place where I was raised. So I just wanted to call it Camp Creek as a sort of dedication to my homeplace."
"Now, another old timer here that we hear that most fiddle players play that can play a fiddle at all is the Mockingbird. I got this from Fiddlin' Red Herron who really did a good job on this, I thought. I got my idea from him but I made some changes in it and worked out my own arrangement on it to suit my own style of playing the fiddle."
Joe later re-recorded Cruel Willie on his final Cotton Eyed Joe CD in 2001, but the 1973 version is hard to beat.
NB: (a) bass on Kawliga. Voice by Chuckie Mashburn.
